Our Lonely Planet guides put a pretty good case for a visit to Berat but an entire day is too much to dedicate to what amounts to about 90 minutes of sightseeing. The Ottoman houses that cling to the hillside are impressive and the view from the castle was superb but they just didn't warrant a total of 4.5 hours in a minibus.
The next morning we decided to withdraw from Albania without delay and head to Lake Ohrid in Macedonia. Before we left the building, the hostel dog, after distributing the contents of the rubbish bin across the dormitory, pissed all over my backpack leaving me little choice but to douse it in water and sponge it off with the bedsheets. Interestingly, the dog's dedication and pride in his work left him (in this blogger's opinion) far higher on the evolutionary scale than that of his fellow citizens!
