Prizren & Peja
After bidding farewell to Matt, Hans and I took a cab to the bus station to take the 90 minute journey south to Prizren. Armed with burek and bananas we found our seats and before long the buildings of Pristina were replaced by scrapheaps and timberyards dotted along the highway. Prizren itself was like a smaller, poorer version of Pristina but shared the vibrancy and energy that we had felt so strongly since arriving in this limbo-land. Another 90 minute bus ride delivered us to Peja which was similar in size and had a rather nice bazaar in the centre of town. At one point we took a cab to the monastery up the hill but were told by the Italian KFOR guards that it was too late for us to visit as the priest had already left. Instead we had a very average dinner on a rooftop restaurant before mooching back to the bus station for what we were fully expecting to be a very crap journey indeed. As a final blow to our sanity, Hans' happy observation that we had not heard a single Australian accent in the entire region was ruined 20 minutes before our bus arrived as two girls walked past and asked us if we were lost. We explained that we were waiting for the bus to Podgorica and they ran off to get their bags as they were trying to get to Sarajevo and this was their best chance yet. After a while we were on a cramped bus that would wind it's way over the mountains before dumping us in Podgorica in the early hours of the morning. Joy!
